Unhappy League of Gentlemen (great mystery-comedy)

On German TV one of the most interesting British comedy series was League of Gentlemen. It was about a village where everybody was somehow evil or crazy in very strange ways - basically an absurd mix of mystery and comedy - like an even more bizarre variant of Twin Peaks.

In Germany it was broadcast last year on Comedy Central. Unfortunately they cancelled the series after only 6 episodes. It is a pity that they don't repeat the complete series. I guess the reason is that Comedy Central generally avoids to broadcasts shows where the order of episodes matters - because it has so few viewers that they expect people only to zap into their channel in between rather than having fans those wait for every episode of their shows.

The league of gentlemen is a black comedy, and boy do you have to have a strong stomach and be some what twisted to watch and enjoy it , i am probably their number 1 fan lol, they are fantastic !

The scene is set , in a valley from up north, and the town is called Roysten Vasey whish is actually Roy chubby brown's real name, he is the foul mouthed comedian we all love, and he is the mayor in the league lol...

Tubbs and Edward are the main characters, and you have babs the tranny who drives babs cabs, there are loads of characters but they are all done by the same guys, and pauline from job club , with mickey is just hilarious !!

It's such a warped comedy you cant help but love it, i have their dvd here " live from drury lane " its bloody crazy !!, my son can imitate nearly all of them down to a tea, .....
you have Hilary the butcher who by the way likes to make human sausages and pies etc, and those who consume the meat suffer with nose bleeds lol, you also have Mr Chinnery the Vet, who always manages to not do a very good job lol, and a whole crew of nutters in between, but did you know that none of the programmes they made are directed, they dont have a director they do it all themselves ! i wish they would make a comeback because its the best comedy i have ever sen in my life, and i just dont think there is anyone who could do better than them, not a chance,.

And if you do get to watch it, i bet the german will make you squirm lol.......

Yes, it was a fairly brutal and sinister horror comedy. But I also liked e.g. the Monthy Python TV series (despite the tons of spilled Hollywood ketchup in it) - especially I love all those absurdly surreal cartoon animations in it. I would love to program some similar anarchic cartoon stuff. While I definitely will not take any LSD, I have plenty of ideas for the same kind of bizarre psychedelic 1970th pictures.

I own the ancient PC game "Monty Python's Complete Waste of Time"(?). Unfortunately it is from 486er era, so the film clips from the TV series in it are only post stamp sized and look like filmed with an early brain fryer.

Please tell me why you find the League of gentlemen brutal and sinister, it's hilarious man that's what it is ! it's a full blown p*** take of the people that live up North, if you watch every single episode from the beginning in utter silence and absorb, you will probably come out wearing a straight jacket !........

No seriously, you gotta hand it to the guys, no Director, brilliant imaginations, it's just got it all really, the trouble with you is ... your not LOCAL !!! PMSL, this is a local place for local people, hehe..

May be that sinister is a wrong word? I don't find it bad, just with a lot of (sufficiently absurd) horror fantasy stuff in it. Monty Python's infamous "Spring Surprise" chocolates (those pierce both cheeks with a steel spring) were e.g. a similar brutal invention, but within a comedy story it is ok so long the violence stays purely fictional (much unlike the genuine brutality in Fist of Zen).

Do you remember Stephen King's TV series Kingdom Hospital? It was about ghosts and demons spooking in a hospital where plenty of very absurd (and hillarious) things happened. It was a quite similar mystery comedy series like League of Gentlemen. It definitely was sinister, but I loved it.
