In the middle of a recession or the end as the as certain officials would like us to believe you have to wonder why the likes of the Daily Mail would think we were interested in stories about how the rich have had to downsize also, whether it be going from shopping at Harrods to Sainsbury’s or living in a property worth £10million to a £6million property.
Should we feel sorry for them? Well that is a personal preference but it is a hard thing to do when they talk as if they are on the poverty line and maybe destitute this very day while in the real world thousands have lost their jobs now cueing up for JSA each week desperately trying to find a job and hopefully one that they are qualified for and not something at the local factory.
Twice this week the Daily Mail have fed us stories on middle class women who have managed along with their husbands to make millions and yet now claim how hard loosing a few millions has effected their lives, it stories of riches to rags!
First up was Anthea Turner 49 once the golden girl of early morning tv who was also the highest paid female presenter but since 2008 Andrea has sold her story on how her and husband Grant who at one point had a £100million property business have been hit by the credit crunch and been forced to give up their ££10million property in favour of a £6million house that use to belong to Chris Evans.
Long gone are the skiing holidays in the alps and the long breaks in the French Riviera on their yacht nor can she recall the last time she had a good nights sleep because of the stress and worry, it was as she said devastating having to say goodbye to her home but not to worry as Anthea stated 'We have had to re-evaluate our lives. I don't think a £5million mansion makes you happy.'
The 57 acres of land are now gone as are most likely the vast amount of vehicles which Anthea clearly feels terrible about 'Those people who moan about you driving around in your nice big car are forgetting the guy who washes the car now hasn't got a job or who did the maintenance on it.'
I would have thought personally that the guy washing your car and the guy maintaining it did not solely rely on the income supplied by yourselves but if it was lord help him as she clearly doesn’t hold benefit claimers in high esteem as Anthea say’s 'Look,' 'I'm a taxpayer and I'm also paying for people who say they're disabled and have six kids and are out playing golf every weekend. We can all play that game. Say a sofa company that employs six people goes bust. They are now out of work and we're paying for them, too.
Though on the other hand she has proven despite been chucked out of the limelight i.e mainstream she has still managed to bring in the money what ever flack she has faced because of it, since leaving GMTV she has recently advertised Flash cleaning products, is now a well known face in the pantomime world, has put her once perfect image to use with BBC3’s Perfect Housewife and the subsequent books like The Perfect Christmas and most recently advertising British Gammon.
Does the fact that their family business went bust and had to downsize make you feel sorry for them despite the fact they are still living in a home most people could only dream about, is this just a case of spoilt celebs, loosing the private pool and the holidays of extravagance? Possibly or maybe not yet I’m sure Anthea and Grant won’t be visiting Lidl or Butlins anytime soon because of the credit crunch!
