OK so you know you need a cartoonistand you have found a cartoonist whose style you like and who you think will be able to provide you with what you want judging by what you have seen of their work online. The best way to contact that cartoonist in the main will be by email in the first instance. Some will like to talk on the phone as the next step some may prefer first contact by phone. If they do it will likely say so on their website. If you do contact via email do not send attachmentsuntil a cartoonist has replied and your are past the point of first contact. Think about it, with all the computer virus's around cartoonists are very unlikely to open attachments from strangers, I mean would you?
Ok firstly let me give you an example of how easy it is for a cartoonist to interpret what you say not quite as you imagined and had in mind. This example is no fault of the cartoonist Jamie as it was my brief and my not being detailed enough that led to this.
So we have a character called "Hilton Paris" during his creation when I was giving Jamie the design brief I told Jamie I wanted Hilton to hold a pencil and for the pencil to be "smoking" which in my mind was to portray a "fast writer" as Hilton Paris was to be used to sell SEO & SEO Writing and to advertise Businesses online in a funny viral marketing story.
Take a look at the header banner on Hilton-Paris.net and you will see it almost looks like Hilton Paris is "smoking" his pencil. See how easy it is to get things not quite how you had in mind? It can be simple little things like that, that can add to time and frustration and of course an outcome that was not quite what you had in mind. In the Hilton Paris case I decided to leave it as is and use it as an example of how details need to be expressed and explained in a way that can be interpreted the way you envisage them. Just because you know what you mean does not mean the cartoonist does unless you specify precisely what you have in mind.
So you likely have a character or characters in mind, you can probably almost picture what you would like. If you have drawings or photographs or can see images elsewhere (no matter where they are online) then you can use those to help provide the brief your chosen cartoonist will need. You will need to give as much detail as possible in the simplest terms. So choose Hex colours and specify where they should be. Mention whether these should be solid colours or shaded or highlighted. Go into body positions and facial expressions. Explain to the cartoonist the object of the cartoon in the simplest written words you can. The more clearly and conciselyyou can define your needs to better the outcome will. If you want spots, stripes green elephants with purple spots & with rabbit ears or clowns standing on their heads with rockets coming out out of their ears, say so.
Specify what spots or stripes, say where you want them, the size the shape and as much details as you imagine in your end results cartoon picture. If you do not specify something, sadly, cartoonists are not mind readers and though they can interpret things very well there are limits to their inexhaustible abilities.
Now I will use HostTed as an example of the brief I gave that resulted in the HostTed The Hosting Ted Double T Ted's Cartoon Charcater.
I asked the cartoonist for a Teddy Bear character and included a link to the sort of look and shape I had in mind for the shape of the head, ears etc. I then specified I wanted the base colour of the Teddy Bear character to be #FFCC33 with shading or highlighting to suit/fit accordingly. The Teddy Bear should be dressed in a black/dark tuxedo and wear a white shirt with a dark red bow tie.
The character should look welcoming and smiley faced with open arms and thumbs up. The cartoon therefore needed fingers. The details would include pockets and colllars in appropriate places and HostTed The Hosting Ted should look like a genial host of a dinner party in teddy bear form. If you look around at pictures of HostTed you will see that is exactly what I got. The character was also to be included in a cartoon strip and has subsequently been reproduced by other cartoonists to my original design produced by the first cartoonist to produce HostTed.
These subsequent apearances have a different type of brief as the characters exist already and so it is normal for the text that appears with the cartoons images to quite heavily dictate the characters frorm and role in the setting in regards to their expressions and body positions. I design cartoons and write such text and I can also say that the reverse can also be true where an exisitng cartoon strip can have the text rewritten around the scene already produced.
So if you have your brief for a single character or a number off characters and you are wanting them in scenes with text it is a good idea to have that text prepared. If not you may want input from the cartoonist in that regard to. Many cartoonist also provide such services, some prefer to just work with images and not have to actually come up with your meassage in word form as they prefer interpreting the words and message into picture form.It is a case of horses for courses. Cartoon Artists will usually specify on their sites the skills they are able to offer.
So now it's time to look for a cartoonist. Please check out the cartoonists below or to see the cartoonists and other cartoonists freelance portfolios check that link. Please also check out the Double T Ted's® Cartoonists. Remember wherever you want specifics say so, or otherwise you leave things open to interpretation and artistic license.
Remember if you don't say you want a cloudy grey sky when you mention sky in the background, for example, unless the rest of the picture makes that element obvious, you will more likely get a blue sky and a bright cheery back drop. This will be nobodies fault as such other than not being specific. It would however save time if these things are clearly clarified at the earliest possible stage of the cartoon creation process. Cartoon creation is fun this way, for both you and the cartoonist, as well as the intended viewers of the end result. I hope the above helps you to find a cartoonist and makes doing so as enjoyable a process as it can and should be. Have fun!
